The migration of refugees arriving in Europe or trying to come here has been the subject of a large number of photography projects, especially over the course of the past year. Documentary as well as fine art photographers have turned the spotlight on developments that have provoked a highly controversial debate throughout society. Pictures narrate the stages of refugees’ journeys as well as their arrival in countries like Austria and show the reality of their lives as they wait for their asylum applications to be processed. Other photographers examine the situation in the refugees’ countries of origin. Four photographers will share their experiences in the field and discuss questions concerning the conceptual and aesthetic aspects of their work. Andreas J. Hirsch

In conversation with four leading representatives of European Photography Institutions we will look for an update on key trends and perspectives of contemporary photography. Questions to be discussed will include:
Can we identify generations of photographers working today? In what ways do they differ? In their modes of relating to the world, their approaches to photographic projects, in how they choose and use their tools, in their understanding of the medium, their self-understanding and the ways how they communicate?
The long and difficult story of photography and art continues. How do we perceive this relationship today? With an increasing number of photographers being educated at art schools and striving for their positions in the art market?
The techniques of photography have become more diverse than ever – from Instagram Smartphone Photography to Collodion Wet Plate Photography. Is there actually something like an "analog renaissance"? How differently do new generations of digital natives pick up the tools and processes of analog photography?
A certain number of portfolios or photographic projects display signs of thematic convergence, a narrowing of thematic diversity. What would we recommend to photographers in terms of selection of their subject and topics?
Which key questions about photography should we be asking that are currently left unaddressed? Where are areas we should look into much closer that we usually do? As curators? As photographers?

We select and shape our tools, but they conversely define the results of our work in photography. The history of photography is one of ongoing innovation and rapid technological change, but as photographers have adopted new processes, they have also often paused to look back on the medium’s roots. Examining four exemplary fine art projects, we will discuss the use of different processes of analog photography. What are the conceptual considerations that inform the selection of a technique? How did the photographer harness his or her process of choice to individual ends and integrate it into contemporary conditions of production? How do processes affect the progress of a project and the aesthetics of the resulting work? ZUM BUCH | In ihrer fiktionalen Erzählung AUGUSTINAselbst greift Elisa Asenbaum zahlreiche zeitkritische Aspekte auf absurde und humorvolle Weise auf. Die Idee zum Buch AUGUSTINAselbst begann 2009 mit einem konzeptartigen Spiel, welches über das Ich als Entität reflektierte. Gespaltene Persönlichkeiten bieten oftmals interessanten Stoff, doch die Autorin interessierte sich für die Umkehrung: eine Person, die von mehr als einer Person erfunden wird, eine kollektive Figur. Eine solche ist Augustina: vielgesichtig, vielschichtig handelnd. Nächtens träumt sie, schlüpft in verschiedenste Seins- und Wesenszustände und tagsüber geht eine andere – ohne Wissen vom 'unbewussten' Traumgeschehen – ihrem Tagesrhythmus nach. Eine zweite Inspirationsquelle für Asenbaums Erzählung war das "Zenon-Paradoxon vom fliegenden Pfeil", welches der Künstlerin und Autorin als formidables Exempel für eine westliche philosophische und wissenschaftliche Denktradition schien und ihr damit einen Fächer von thematischen Ansatzpunkten für ihre literarische Fiktion eröffnete.

"Wie traumlos erwacht und voll Unbestimmtheit fühlt sich Augustina morgens, wenn sie in die Uniform ihres Alltags schlüpft. Zwischen versprengten absurden Traumelementen taucht der Leser, einem immer wieder aufgenommenen Handlungsfaden folgend, in ein rätselhaftes Geschehen ein, das sich langsam zu einer chronologischen Geschichte verdichtet."

How do contemporary photographers handle the question of beauty? Which idea of beauty is barely still, or already no longer, relevant in art? How can photography serve to articulate a critique of the prevailing ideal of beauty?

The title This Beast Called Beauty suggests the pitfalls of the debate: a fractal concept that figures prominently in art history and philosophy as well as creative and social practices yet often proves hard to pin down. Beauty is a point of contention not only between different theoretical positions, aesthetics, and artistic approaches; even the references to today’s dominant idea of beauty in product advertising, brand communication, and fashion photography turn out to be highly inhomogeneous.

Photography as a medium of recollection and instrument of a collective memory needs be continually reassessed. Four historic bodies of work provide an occasion to discuss aspects of the historic relevance of photography between the poles of reality and fiction. The conversation will compare examples of the history of photography in Austria with American counterparts and address the distinction between auteur and anonymous photography.
