Clouds have always intrigued not only meteorologists but also artists and writers, inspiring them to create different reflections.

The Collection of the City of Vienna comprises hundreds of works from the past 50 years that examine this subject – in paintings, prints and drawings, films and photographs. In the 77 selected works by 64 artists, these both fleeting and powerful figures in the sky emerge in various ways. The cloud sometimes appears as a signal on the periphery, or is seen as a mirror of knowledge or a surface onto which we project longings. At other times it is elevated into a symbol or used as a metaphor.
