Start Gallery
The Start Gallery of the City of Vienna was conceived as a launching pad for young artists. Since 1987, this initiative by Wolfgang Hilger, the expert in charge of art purchases by the Department for Cultural Affairs of the City of Vienna from 1985 to 2003, has enabled graduates of art universities and other newcomers to win an audience for their output through personal exhibitions. The activities of the Start Gallery contribute to creating publicity for young artists in Vienna, enable them to gather important exhibition experience and thus further their artistic careers. In addition, the Start Gallery disseminates information sheets to advertise the work of these artists.
Originally housed on a purely temporary basis at the premises of the art association Kunstverein Wien Alte Schmiede (1010 Vienna, Schönlaterngasse 9) and in the Künstlerhaus Passage, the Artothek of the City of Vienna organised eight to ten exhibitions annually in recent years. Until 2003, the young artists were selected for the Start Gallery programme by Wolfgang Hilger. Since then, the choice of artists has been the task of an independent jury of the Visual Arts Division of the City of Vienna. Interested artists are invited to call +43 1 4000-84750 for more information.
